We have several offices in Central and Southern England and have ambitious plans to expand our business. We have a new opportunity for a Technical Skills Manager to join our Learning & Development team. This is a permanent full-time role with hybrid and flexible working options. This role will involve once/twice weekly day travel to other offices across the entire Shaw Gibbs Group.
The Role
You will be responsible for leading and executing a comprehensive technical training strategy to support the development and progression of our technical team members. You also be responsible for designing and delivering our trainee development strategy, our technical training catalogue, some of our Accounting and Audit specialist training and ensuring we optimise the use of our technical training provider memberships. Your key responsibilities will include:
  • Lead Training Strategy Execution – Develop and deliver a comprehensive Accounting & Audit training programme for our trainees and technical team members.
  • Trainee Development & Bridging Support – Guide trainees through their first three years, embedding formal learning into practical, real-world applications.
  • Career Progression & Talent Mapping - Create structured technical skill progression frameworks showing clear growth pathways mapping out the skills and experiences needed at each level.
  • Promote Training Opportunities - Create, manage and promote a catalogue of technical skills training events with both internal and external experts.
  • Deliver Engaging Training Sessions – Conduct in-person and virtual training, using case studies and interactive learning methods.
  • Create & Manage Learning Materials – Develop digital resources (manuals, Loom videos, presentations) to support training programmes.
  • Collaborate on Skills Development – Work with discipline heads to identify skills gaps and tailor training solutions to business needs.
  • Ensure Compliance & Industry Standards – Work closely with our Group Compliance Manager and manage relationships with regulatory bodies (AAT, CTA, ACCA, ICAEW) to ensure we stay updated on accounting and auditing regulations.
  • Evaluate & Improve Training Impact – Assess effectiveness through feedback, data analysis, and reporting, making continuous improvements.
  • Maximise Training Resources – Lead the adoption of professional memberships and external learning opportunities to enhance technical expertise.

About You
We would like to hear from you if you are fully ACA/ACCA qualified and have a minimum of 4+ years of experience in senior audit and/or accounting roles. An in-depth knowledge of audit methodologies and accounting standards (IFRS, UK GAAP) is essential. 
We are also looking for:
  • Strong understanding of regulatory developments in the accounting and audit space.
  • Prior experience in designing and delivering both in-person and virtual training sessions or mentoring within a professional environment.
  • A passion for learning and professional development with an understanding of adult learning principles and best practices in training and learning.
  • Experience with tax compliance is highly desirable but not essential.
  • A people-oriented approach with the ability to influence, build rapport and motivate team members.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and/or confident in delivering engaging training sessions to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to explain complex technical information in a clear and engaging way, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and training courses simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with stakeholders across the business.
  • Analytical Thinking: Capable of evaluating the effectiveness of training sessions and making continuous improvements.
  • Strong IT skills, PPT, MS Office.
